  4. Rapid Construction Timeline- Launched just five months after its keel-laying (April 2026), reflecting accelerated domestic execution in complex non-combatant scientific shipbuilding.
  5. Operational Design Life- Engineered for a service lifespan of 30 years, capable of sustaining long-endurance expeditions in extreme oceanic conditions, including the Southern Ocean.
  6. Dual Regulatory Classification- Built in strict compliance with international maritime safety codes, holding dual-class certification from the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

Replacement Strategy & Transition to Self-Reliance


  1. Phasing Out Legacy Foreign Tonnage- Positioned to replace the 43-year-old ORV Sagar Kanya, which was procured from Germany in 1983 and long served as India's oceanographic workhorse.
  2. Aatmanirbharta in Research Fleets- Marks a decisive shift from foreign vessel acquisitions to indigenous design, engineering, and outfitting by Indian defence public sector shipyards.
  3. Expanding Polar & Marine Horizons- Paves the way for the Ministry of Earth Sciences' planned acquisition of subsequent specialized vessels, including a dedicated Polar Research Vessel (PRV).
  4. Civilian-Defence Shipbuilding Convergence- Leverages GRSE’s four decades of naval survey vessel expertise (e.g., INS Sagardhwani, Sandhayak-class Large Survey Vessels like INS Sanshodhak).
  5. Strategic Indigenous Value Chain- Engages domestic MSMEs and Indian precision-engineering firms for onboard scientific outfitting, hydraulic winches, and acoustic sensor mounts.
  6. Sub-Surface Interoperability- Serves as a versatile surface platform capable of integrating technologies engineered across premier national institutes like NIOT, INCOIS, and NIO.

Scientific Instruments & Deep-Sea Survey Capabilities


  1. Underway Swath Bathymetry- Equipped with multibeam bathymetric sonar arrays and sub-bottom profilers to map deep-sea floor topography at depths up to 6,000 metres (6 km).
  2. Geophysical Seismic Exploration- Fitted with multichannel seismic systems and acoustic drop-keels for seabed stratification studies and tectonic fault line identification.
  3. Autonomous & Robotic Vehicle Deployment- Features specialized stern A-frames and heave-compensated handling gear to deploy and recover Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) developed by NIOT.
  4. Oceanographic Water-Column Profiling- Executes high-precision Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) profiling, rosette water sampling, and vertical/horizontal multi-net biological collections.
  5. Geological Benthic Sampling- Capable of surface/deep-sea mooring operations, seabed coring, grab sampling, and rock dredging via heavy-duty chain-bag dredges.
  6. Onboard Laboratories & Data Processing- Houses clean analytical wet/dry laboratories, allowing scientists to perform preliminary sample analysis, data synthesis, and geochemical processing at sea.

  1. Critical Minerals & Hydrothermal Sulphides- Mandated to survey polymetallic hydrothermal sulphides and seafloor mineral deposits along active tectonic spreading ridges in the Central and Southwest Indian Ocean.
  2. Marine Biodiversity & Bioprospecting- Supports deep benthic biological surveys to document extreme microbial biodiversity, deep-sea fauna, and genetic resources for biomedical applications.
  3. Climate Change & Southern Ocean Studies- Collects air-sea interaction data, upper-air meteorological metrics, and ocean current profiles to refine monsoonal forecasting models and study the global carbon sink.
  4. Early Warning Infrastructure- Assists in maintaining offshore moored tsunami buoy networks and national ocean-observing arrays for disaster forecasting in the Indian Ocean Region.
