Amaravati: The Sole Capital of Andhra Pradesh

  • Following the receipt of Presidential assent for the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026; 
    • Amaravati has been granted statutory status as the state's sole capital, which will be deemed effective retrospectively from June 2, 2024.
  • A formal request for statutory recognition was made through a resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on March 28, 2026.
  • The statutory confirmation has officially neutralized the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party's (YSRCP) '3-capital' proposal (Visakhapatnam as the executive capital, Kurnool as the judicial capital, and Amaravati as the legislative capital).
  • The foundation stone for the development of Amaravati was laid in the year 2015 during the tenure of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
  • It is a state-of-the-art greenfield city located on the banks of the Krishna River.

      • On June 2, 2014, Telangana became a separate state from Andhra Pradesh.
      • Hyderabad: According to the provisions of Section 5 of the Act, Hyderabad was the shared capital of both states until the year 2024.
