About the Convention on Migratory Species

  • Established in 1979 in Bonn, Germany, it is also referred to as the Bonn Convention.

  • Member: 133 Countries.

  • Secretariat: Bonn, Germany.

  • Aim: To conserve migratory animals and their habitats across national habitats and across borders.

  • The CMS stands as the sole intergovernmental body under the UN dedicated entirely to protecting and managing migratory species- whether terrestrial, aquatic, or avian- across their full habitats.

      • It is a legally binding global treaty.

  • Conference of the Parties is the principal decision-making body of the Convention.

    • It meets every 3 years.

  • The CMS contains two distinct appendices.

    • Appendix I: Endangered species requiring strict protection.

    • Appendix II: Species needing international cooperation.

    • Notably, it is possible for a single migratory species to be included in both.
  • Key Report: World’s Migratory Species Report

  • Note: India hosted the 13th CMS COP in 2020.
