  • Key Requirements to Become a GM 

    • FIDE Rating: You must achieve a FIDE Elo rating of at least 2500 in standard (classical) chess at some point in your career.

    • Three GM Norms: A norm is a high-level performance in a tournament. 

      • To earn a norm, a player must:

        • Play a tournament of at least 9 rounds.

        • Achieve a Performance Rating (TPR) of 2600+.

        • Play against at least 3 Grandmasters.

        • Face opponents from at least 3 different federations (countries).

        • Over the 3 norms, cover at least 27 games

    • Direct Titles 

      • You can bypass the norm/rating process by winning certain elite events, such as the World Junior Championship, the World Senior Championship, or reaching the final 16 of the FIDE World Cup.

        • World Cup: Reach the top 16.  

        • World Junior (U20): Win Gold.

        • World Senior (50+ / 65+): Win Gold.

        • Women's World Cup: Win Gold.
