Answer-
Introduction
- Despite strict restrictions imposed by the princely states, newspapers and journals emerged as powerful instruments of political awakening, social reform, and nationalist consciousness in Rajasthan.
1. Political Awakening:-
- Rajasthan Kesari (1920), founded by Vijay Singh Pathik, exposed the oppression of the Bijolia Peasant Movement and the excesses of princely rule.
- Navin Rajasthan, the mouthpiece of the Rajasthan Seva Sangh, was banned and later revived as Tarun Rajasthan. Both championed the Praja Mandal and peasant movements.
- Rajputana Herald and Rajasthan Samachar advocated the responsible government and criticized the policies of both the British administration and the princely states.
2. Social Reforms and Women Empowerment:-
- Arya Martand promoted widow remarriage by publishing such advertisements free of cost.
- Tyag Bhumi propagated Gandhian ideals and promoted women's awakening through its 'Aadhi Duniya' column.
- Moti Begum, one of Rajasthan's earliest women journalists, was associated with the Rajputana Gazette.
3. Unification of Rajasthan:-
- Lokvani, Praja Sevak, and Riyasat generated public support for the Praja Mandal movement, democratic rights, and the integration of the princely states into the Indian Union.
4. Integration with the National Movement:-
- Rajasthan Kesari, Tarun Rajasthan, and Navjyoti popularised the ideals of Swadeshi and Non-Cooperation, while linking Rajasthan's popular movements with the Indian freedom struggle.
Conclusion:-
- Editors such as Vijay Singh Pathik, Ramnarayan Chaudhary, Haribhau Upadhyay, and Kanak Madhukar were prominent leaders of popular movements. Thus, journalism in Rajasthan was not merely a medium of information but a powerful force behind public awakening and the freedom struggle.
