WHY CYPRUS IS IMPORTANT FOR INDIA — STRATEGIC GEOMETRY –
1. Turkey angleIndia and Cyprus share a "concern" over Turkey — Turkey backed Pakistan during Operation Sindoor and has a strained relationship with Cyprus (over the Cyprus dispute since 1974 Turkish occupation of North Cyprus). (Most important reason)
2. LocationCyprus is located close to Turkey and Syria. It is an EU member state despite being geographically in Asia. This makes it a unique pivot between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
3. IMEEC nodeCyprus is a crucial part of the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) — the infrastructure project announced at G20 New Delhi 2023. Cyprus, in the Mediterranean, provides a key maritime and connectivity node.
4. EU gatewayCyprus is an investment and financial gateway between India and the entire European continent. It ranks among India's top 10 investors; investment from Cyprus into India has nearly doubled over the past decade.
5. India-EU FTAThe India–EU Free Trade Agreement (under negotiation) — Cyprus's EU Council Presidency makes it a key interlocutor for India to press for progress on the FTA.
6. Defence exportsCyprus wants to buy Indian drones and missiles — battle-tested in Operation Sindoor. This marks India's emerging role as a defence exporter to European-allied nations, boosting Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence.
IMEEC — INDIA MIDDLE EAST EUROPE ECONOMIC CORRIDOR
Announced at G20 New Delhi Summit (September 2023). A multimodal connectivity corridor linking India → UAE → Saudi Arabia → Jordan → Israel → Greece → Europe.
1. Cyprus roleAs a Mediterranean island nation close to the eastern Mediterranean entry point, Cyprus is a crucial maritime node in the IMEEC network. Indo-Pacific connectivity through Mediterranean.
2. India's interestIMEEC is India's strategic answer to China's BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) — a rules-based, transparent, partner-owned connectivity alternative.
INDIA'S EUROPEAN DIPLOMACY IN 2026 and role of cyprus
Ø PM Modi's Europe visits in May 2026 included Italy (FAO Agricola Medal, India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership) and now Cyprus — part of a consolidated European outreach.
Ø India-EU relations are at an inflection point — India-EU FTA negotiations underway; EU seeking to diversify supply chains away from China; India offering itself as an alternative manufacturing and investment destination.
Ø Operation Sindoor aftermath — India's defence exports gaining credibility as Indian-made systems are now battle-proven. Cyprus's interest in drones and missiles is a direct consequence.
Ø Turkey's role: Turkey backed Pakistan during Operation Sindoor and occupies North Cyprus (since 1974) — this shared adversarial geometry with Turkey brings India and Cyprus closer.
