'Kusha' (Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile System) (UPSC/RAS/PSI)

Read in:
  • Nodal Ministry- Ministry of Defence (MoD).
  • Developing Agency- Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Key features-

  1. Long-Range Threshold- Target interception range up to 400 km.
  2. Engagement Envelope- High-speed, high-altitude aerial threats.
  3. Target Spectrum- Fighter jets, stealth aircraft, UAVs, cruise missiles, (LR-SAM ARCHITECTURE)  and large enemy airborne assets.
  4. System Components- Multi-function radars, command-and-control centers, and mobile launch units (developed by DRDO & Indian industry partner.
  • Target Interception Capability- Designed to detect, track, and neutralize a wide spectrum of aerial threats including stealth fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles, and airborne early warning aircraft at ranges extending up to 400 km.
  • Global Strategic Benchmark- Positions India alongside an elite group of nations possessing indigenous long-range surface-to-air systems. It provides capabilities comparable to the operational Russian S-400 Triumf system currently operated by the Indian Air Force.

Larger Vision- Mission Sudarshan Chakra & Layered Air Defense-

  • Project 'Kusha' works in synergy with other DRDO air defense initiatives to establish a multi-layered nationwide air defense shield under Mission Sudarshan Chakra over the next decade-

Defense Layer

System / Missile Platform

Primary Role

Outer Layer (Long Range)

Project 'Kusha' (LR-SAM)

Intercepts high-altitude, long-range threats up to 400 km.

Medium Range

QRSAM (Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile)

Protects mobile armored columns and tactical assets.

Close-In / Point Defense

VSHORADS (Very Short Range Air Defence System)

Neutralizes low-altitude aerial threats, drones, and precision munitions.

Directed Energy Layer

High-Power Laser DEWs(Directed Energy Weapons)

Hard-kill capability against drone swarms and incoming projectiles.

Integrated System

IADWS (Integrated Air Defence Weapon System)

Unifies all sensors, radars, and firing units under a common command matrix.

Strategic & Aatmanirbharta Significance-

  1. Import Dependency Elimination- Directly reduces multi-billion-dollar foreign procurement reliance for high-tier air defense systems.
  2. Infrastructure Protection- Designed to create a protective canopy over critical military installations, population centers, nuclear facilities, and strategic economic infrastructure.
  3. Domestic Defense Industry Integration- Showcases collaborative manufacturing, with core subsystems engineered by private defense partners and public sector enterprises alongside DRDO laboratories.

Project Kusha - a long-range SAM typically has a range of over 200 km. Right now, India's long-range air defence relies on the Russian S-400 Triumf, which is understood to be capable of hitting targets up to 400 km away. Project Kusha is DRDO's indigenous long-range SAM system designed specifically to protect strategic military and civilian assets/infrastructure from a range of aerial threats- fighter jets, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), and large enemy aircraft, across a wide range and altitude envelope.
