The Endocrine System

  • The endocrine system is a network of ductless glands that secrete hormones directly into the blood. Along with the nervous system, it regulates growth, metabolism, reproduction, fluid balance and homeostasis. Major glands include pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreas, pineal, thymus and gonads.

Structure of the Pituitary Gland

  • The pituitary gland is a pea-sized gland at the base of the brain, located below the hypothalamus in the sella turcica. It has two functionally distinct lobes. The anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis) is glandular and synthesizes hormones under hypothalamic control. The posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis) is neural tissue that stores and releases hormones produced in the hypothalamus.

Major Hormones and Functions


Anterior Pituitary Hormones:

  1. Growth Hormone (GH) – promotes body growth, protein synthesis and bone development.
  2. Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) – stimulates the thyroid to produce T3 and T4, which regulate basal metabolic rate and are essential for normal growth, development and energy metabolism.
  3. Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) – stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete cortisol, important in stress and metabolism.
  4. Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) – promotes ovarian follicle development and spermatogenesis.
  5. Luteinizing Hormone (LH) – triggers ovulation and supports testosterone secretion.
  6. Prolactin (PRL) – stimulates milk production.

Posterior Pituitary Hormones:

  1. Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH/Vasopressin) – increases water reabsorption by kidneys and reduces urine output.
  2. Oxytocin – causes uterine contractions and milk ejection.

Role in Hormonal Balance


  • The pituitary plays a central role through the hypothalamic-pituitary-target organ axis. The hypothalamus regulates pituitary activity, while pituitary hormones control other endocrine glands. Hormonal balance is mainly maintained by negative feedback. Increased levels of target hormones such as thyroxine and cortisol inhibit further hypothalamic and pituitary stimulation, whereas decreased levels promote secretion. Thus, the pituitary coordinates growth, development, reproduction, metabolism, stress response and water balance, thereby maintaining internal stability.
